Community Advisory Committee (CAC)
The Community Advisory Committee is an advisory committee to the Fresno County Charter Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) in which they focus on parent education and support. The CAC strives in improving and promoting communication between schools, parents, and community agencies, to coordinate and facilitate activities on behalf of children with exceptional needs. The CAC is made up of parents, special and general education teachers, administrators, community members and students with disabilities. The CAC Local Educational Agency (LEA) representatives are nominated and appointed by the school boards of SELPA members LEAs. The CAC meets at least four times a year and everyone is welcome to attend.
CACs are active, creative bodies that assist in advising local school districts, the Board of Education (BOE), and special education administration about the SELPA, annual priorities, parent education and other special education related activities. Parents comprise a majority of the CAC membership and the majority of the parents are parents of children with exceptional needs. CAC members are initially selected by their peers or nominated through their LEA. Candidates are then approved by their LEA governing board.
The CAC serves only in an advisory capacity and may recommend priorities or changes to be addressed by the plan. Other responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Encourage community and parental involvement in the development, review, and implementation of the Local Plan.
- Assist in parent education and in recruiting parents and other volunteers who may contribute to the implementation of the Local Plan.
- Recommend annual priorities to be addressed by the plan.
- Support activities on behalf of individuals with exceptional needs.
- Assist in parent awareness of the importance of regular school attendance.
- Provide families an opportunity to share resources and support.
Because of the geographic diversity anticipated within the Charter SELPA, meetings may take place through teleconference. For purpose of this section, "teleconference" means a meeting where the members are in different locations, connected by electronic means, through either audio or video, or both.
